Since January 2024 Karl Bernewitz is engaged as new chorus master at the Theatre Bremen.

From 2018 on he served in the same position at Saxony State Theatres. There he also worked as orchestral conductor in many performances.

In July 2021 he was able to win the first prize and the audience price in the international conducting competition Bucharest (BMI).

During the year 2023 he additionally worked as artistic director and conductor for the chamber choir “Junges Ensemble Dresden”.

He received his basic musical training in the boy’s choir of St. Thomas’s church in Leipzig (Thomanerchor Leipzig). After this, he studied orchestral conducting with Ekkehard Klemm and Steffen Leißner at the »Carl-Maria von Weber« College of Music in Dresden.

During an Erasmus stay, he continued his studies with B. Tommy Andersson and Daniel Harding at the royal college of music Stockholm and attended masterclasses led by Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Rumon Gamba, Lorenz René and Christian Kluttig. He gained initial conducting experiences as, i.e., musical assistant at the Saxony State Theatres, the Norrlandsoperan Umea (Sweden), at the Royal Opera in Stockholm and with the young artist program/ opera studio of the Saxony State Opera in Dresden (Junges Ensemble der Semperoper Dresden).

From 2015 to 2018 Karl Bernewitz has been Chorus Director in Deputy at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich. In the meantime, he attended further masterclasses with well-known conductors as Bruno Weil, Colin Metters and Jin Wang.
